Trends in Design and Technology of Aluminium Structures in Europe

The design of Aluminium Alloy Structures in the field of Civil Engineering in Europe is based on the use of Eurocode 9(Design of Aluminium Structures), which was published in 2006. The current version of Eurocode 9 is composed by five Parts, dealing with general rules, structural fire design, structures susceptible of fatigue, cold formed sheeting, shell structures. Today a recent project is going on for the preparation of the so-called 'new generation' of all the structural Eurocodes. In case of aluminium structures, Eurocode 9 is going to be enriched with additional items. From the connection side, advanced technologies innovative, like bolt channel. From the application side, two important typologies have been introduced: large span roofing and bridging, under form of specific recommendations as Annexes of Eurocode 9. Large span structures are basically represented by reticular plane and space structures with single or double layer. Two geodetic domes have been recently erected in a thermo electrical plan in Italy near Rome with a diameter of 144meters, the largest aluminium domes in the World, which received the European Aluminium Award in 2012. Wide possibilities of applications are recognized in the field of pedestrian bridges and in the refurbishment of existing RC bridges, where the slab is substituted by special extrusions. An example of the use of aluminium in the rehabilitation of old bridges is the 'Real Ferdinando' bridge on the Gagliano river, which was in Italy the first iron suspension bridge made in 1832 and now is the first aluminium bridge.

Chairman of the international PROHITECH conference on “Earthquake Protection of Historical Buildings by Mixed Reversible Technologies” (since 2009). Chairman of the COST C26 Action on “Urban Habitat Constructions under Catastrophic Events” (2006-2010). Chairman of the Steering Committee of SIJLAB “Sino-Italian Laboratory for Archimedes Bridge” (2004-2008). Coordinator of the international Sino-Italian REHICO project on “Innovative methodologies for the rehabilitation of historical constructions” (2006-2009). Member of the Canadian Standard Association (since 2007) . President of the International Conference INALCO “Aluminium Constructions: Sustainability, Durability and Structural Advantages” (Naples 2016). Main research topics: structural analysis and design, steel and aluminium structures (connection, stability), earthquake engineering (seismic design, passive control) and structural restoration (consolidation, upgrading).
Author of more than 1200 papers in journals and conference proceedings, 50 monographs and 36 books (27 in English, 2 in Chinese).
